At the mercy of cellular networks

Mobile phones are the saviour and bane of one's life! So the current debate on the increases of "interconnect charges" between networks is worring, and one wonders why these charges have gone up by over 500 per cent in few years? Surely the huge growth in the number of subscribers must have produced "economies of scale"?

The networks are frequently busy so its not a case of under utilized. International companies considering business in SA, complain of high communication costs!

We have been promised relief early in 2010 by the Communications watchdog! (hopefully not just over the Soccer World Cup period!).

My bet is the cost of interconnect charges will come down, as the "few" mobile companies back off to reduce the "heat" from their users.

But will this be followed by higher call charges and the bottom line remain static?
