In a surprise move, Aston Martin – an unquestionably niche supercar manufacturer has teamed with Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, to develop a luxurious new commuter concept based on Toyota’s iQ, the Cygnet.By Kyle Kock
The two firms are complete polar opposites; the one produces ultra desirable, exclusive automobiles that wear hefty price tags, while the other has built its name around relatively cheap, yet ultimately reliable, vehicles of quality and built to last.
“Now is the right time for Aston Martin to take this first bold step to embark on this special project - made possible with the support of an organisation of Toyota's stature and capability and the intelligent design and perfect city car package of the iQ,” said Dr Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin chief executive.
The Cygnet concept represents the Gaydon-based manufacturer’s attempt at a creative environmentally-friendly transport solution, which will no doubt feature Aston Martin signature luxury, but also be highly fuel efficient. With raving reviews abroad, Euro NCAP 5-star safety rating and low emissions, the iQ is a strong base for Aston Martin’s latest creation.
“Much work is still required, but I am confident that this project could become reality in the not too distant future. This concept - akin to an exclusive tender to a luxury yacht - will allow us to apply Aston Martin design language, craftsmanship and brand values to a completely new segment of the market,” added Bez.
“The offering of a Cygnet with a DBS, DB9 or Vantage is a unique combination of opposites and a novel transport solution allowing intelligent and sensitive mobility on an exclusive and innovative level,” Bez concluded.
