Hello Polo Vivo

VW’s new entry level contender looks like a winner

This is the description of the media involved in the media container above.

With the iconic Citi's retirement at the beginning of this year, Volkswagen South Africa has been preparing a new entry-level contender with the aim of offering affordability, reliability and low cost of ownership. Dubbed the Polo Vivo, VWSA has come across what could very well be a new segment staple.

The Vivo is "German-engineered to exacting international standards", and built at the Uitenhage plant in the Eastern Cape. Thanks to 70 per cent localisation of materials used in the production process, pricing is excellent and parts availability and affordability is optimum. Hundreds of jobs have been created and a vast supplier park in Uitenhage has also been established.

Based on the previous generation Polo, which has remained immensely popular with local consumers, the Polo Vivo is available as a three-door hatchback, five-door hatchback and four-door saloon. Simple touches to the styling have updated the previous generation Polo's looks, which are now more in line with the family design cues exhibited on the Scirocco, Golf 6 and new Polo.

The Polo Vivo enters the market armed with a choice of three four-cylinder engines. The first of two 1,4-litre units produces 55 kW at 5 000 r/min and 132 N.m of torque at 3 600 r/min, while the more powerful version produces 63 kW at 5 000 r/min, with the same torque output.

The range-topping 1,6-litre produces 77 kW at 5 250 r/min and 155 N.m of torque is available at 3 500 r/min. All units are mated with five-speed manual gearboxes.

Features standard across the range are a soft-touch facia, 3 drinks holders in the centre console (one up front, two for the rear), power steering, immobiliser, rake and reach adjustable steering column, tinted windows and twin airbags. Optional extras, available from base level, are air-con, radio/mp3 with USB and Bluetooth connectivity and alarm with central locking.

Sounds and looks very promising. Would like to see if the quality remains. I would like to see a diesel in the lineup. Maybe the original 1400 diesel?

When is the car going on sale?

Nice car! Pity it is overpriced like all other cars in SA.

Another anonynous, generic and totally uninspired shrunken Golf / Polo clone. What happened to the spirit of innovation that spawned the original Golf back in the '70's?

At last the long awaited VIVO..A great car for this price it has been tried, tested and will be just as reliable as the citi golf! !!

I think it is awesome brings back some of the good style features of previous models. Would love to test drive it and then make up my mind. But as my colleauges keep telling me it is time to move on and this could be a good vehicle to move to...can't wait for more information from you guys

Great value. A 1.4 trendline polo in 2005 (With Aircon) cost R120K new. Expect it to be the top seller from now on until it's retired in 10-20 years..

Your car market is obsolet and looks like a third world one. This old and ugly Polo is ultra obsolet here in Europe. Please launch fresh new models sold in Europe and Japan not old bangs!!!!

The Vivo looks cool, but it is a ptiy that they haven't changed the look of the rear. It is now the third generation in the polo range that has the almost exact looking boot area. I was hoping there will be a change, and it was one of the reasons why I did not go for the last sedan model. Can't faulter VW on their reliability, and comfort though.

I don't see a Tiptronic version mentioned ..... could one be ordered with a Tiptronic transmission?

The comments from Mr Louis Du Plessis that the new Vivo is an "uninspiring Golf clone" refers ..... Louis ..... say what you want, but check the sales charts!

The Polo Vivo is not here to replace the MK1"CITI" at all. it is true VWSA was looking at a car that can be a new entry-level contender. it seems they only went for the second generation Polo and cramped it a bit. There is no way I will leave my CITI. This will only increase the number of old Polo''s stolen just to pimp-up the Polo Vivo.. THANK YOU! VWSA, CITI Golf drivers can now relax

How will this model now affect the prices off the 2nd generation face lifted models. Now anyone can buy a new Vivo instead of a 2nd hand 2nd Gen Polo. Also will this model not affect the sales of the 3rd Gen Polo eg in these economical times, after-all everyone is looking to get the best out of their money. Good quality purchase the Vivo.

This vivo polo is A great car for this price, i want one pls

Good vehicle for a starter and cheaper than the previous model 1.4 Polo thus it will be a top seller. Very similar to the previous Polo though so it will keep the old Polo in fashion and not out of date! Bonus for previous model polo owners!

You must all be crazy. ake a look at the price and what you get. NO aircon,No electric windows, NO radio, NO remote locking, NO central locking. You could go and buy a much better car for a whole lot less. But, with your blind folds on, you will happily get taken for a ride!!
