Honda SA has today announced a safety recall of local previous-generation Jazz models (2002-2008) in order to inspect and modify power window switches that could potentially short circuit due to water intrusion.
This recall follows Honda's investigations into the tragic death of 2-year old Vanilla Nurse, daughter of South African satirist Justin Nurse, in September of last year due to an electrical fire in her mother's previous-generation Honda Jazz.
Despite Honda's ongoing in-depth investigation and close work with the police and forensic experts, the actual cause of the fire could not be accurately determined. However, Honda engineers have come to the conclusion that possible water intrusion into the power window switch housing could cause a short circuit - in exceptional circumstances, this could potentially lead to an electrical fire.
As such, Honda has taken the precautionary measure of implementing a safety recall covering all 2002-2008 Honda Jazz units on the local market.
Honda will directly notify all owners of the aforementioned models. Honda dealers will then inspect the electric window switch unit on the driver's door and if water intrusion is noted counter measures will be put in place to prevent future water intrusion and the switch unit will be replaced.
