Images of the third-generation Kia Sportage have emerged showing a vehicle with a strong familial resemblance to the new Sorento.
Utilising the distinctive chromed grille, swept-back headlamps and curved bodywork typical of Kia design boss Peter Schreyer's vision for all new Kia models, the new Sportage will share its platform with the equally-striking Hyundai ix35 compact SUV.
Details regarding the engine lineup, new technologies and specification are somewhat thin on the ground at present, but if this vehicle's commonality with the ix35 is anything to go by it's fair to expect the Kia to feature a 2,0-litre petrol engine and a 2,0-litre R series diesel unit.
These engines develop 123 kW and 135 kW, respectively, both mated with a choice of six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. There is also talk of a V6 petrol unit being added to the lineup, however, there is the general consensus that Kia (and many other manufacturers, for that matter) are aiming to slash fuel consumption and carbon-dioxide emissions, making a the case for a big petrol powerplant in a compact SUV a rather weak one.
Sticking with the ix35 parallel theory, the Sportage could also be the recipient of that model's multi-link rear suspension/MacPherson front suspension setup. In addition to a 4x4 drivetrain, the Sportage could also receive the ix35's Hill Start Assist control and Downhill Brake Control systems.
No details regarding launch dates or regional availability have surfaced yet, but it's possible that the new Sportage will make an appearance at next month's Geneva Motor Show.

Now Kia just need sort out their BAD after market service record....
