The Toyota Prius has become the first petrol-electric hybrid car to be voted one of the “10 best cars for sale in the US” by enthusiast magazine Car and Driver.

The US-based magazine has been compiling the list since 1981. After extensive testing, a 13-member panel of the magazine's editors determined the winners by rating them on a scale of one to 100.

The new Prius has been favourably received by the Japanese and American markets. Toyota says this is due to the model's high standard of features and 'outstanding performance'. The first generation Prius, released in 1997, caused waves as the first mass-produced petrol-electric hybrid and sold more than 120 000 units worldwide.

The 10 best cars according to Car and Driver magazine are:
Acura TSX
Honda S2000
Mazda RX8
Audi S4 Quattro
BMW 3-Series/M3
Chevrolet Corvette
Ford Focus
Honda Accord
Infiniti G35
Toyota Prius
