Porsche’s latest incarnation of the 911 Turbo is due to make an appearance at the upcoming Frankfurt Show, but details and pictures have emerged revealing a more, powerful, composed car with a larger engine and Porsche’s new PDK transmission in the mix.By Gareth Dean
At the heart of this new model lies the same 3,8-litre six-cylinder powerplant from the latest Carrera S. In the Turbo it will feature direct fuel injection and a turbocharger with Porsche’s variable turbine geometry. This engine is mated with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, or can be specified with the company’s seven-speed PDK transmission.
According to Porsche, the new 911 Turbo will usher in significant improvements in performance and fuel economy (around 11,4 litres/100 km), while still returning a healthy 373 kW, a 0-100 km/h time of 3,4 seconds and a top speed of 312 km/h.
PDK-equipped models will sport a three-spoke steering wheel with shift paddles and also houses a display showing when Sport, Sport Plus and launch control have been selected through the optional Sport Chrono package. The paddles are mounted to the back of the steering wheel with right shifts up and left shifts down. They have been introduced as an alternative to the current Tiptronic’s double-function shift buttons, which did not gain favour with all who used them.
Porsche has also optimised its all-wheel drive and PSM (Porsche Stability Management) system, which distributes the torque between the front and rear wheels through an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch, to make the new 911 Turbo an even more involving car to drive. A new system dubbed PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring) is also being offered as an option.
The Cabriolet model shown here sports forged alloy wheels which will be standard on all 911 Turbos. The lightweight 19-inch RS Spyder alloys seen on the coupes will be available as an option.
The new Porsche 911 Turbo will arrive in South Africa in late January with pricing announced closer to that time.
