VW currently the world’s largest automaker

This is the description of the media involved in the media container above.

The Volkswagen Group has officially overtaken Toyota Motor Corporation as the world's largest automaker in terms of unit production; a title that might very well be short lived as the Japanese manufacturer slowly recovers from the global economic slowdown.

Having recently merged with Porsche, the German automotive giant has managed to produce 4,4 million units in the first nine months of 2009, while Toyota, who claimed the title of largest automaker from General Motors after the embattled Detroit producer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year, only produced 4,0 million since January this year.

Although this is well ahead of VW's goal of becoming the largest automaker by 2018, the stay at the top might be temporary as Toyota still boasts the production capacity to put out as much as 10 million units per annum - much more than VW. Pundits believe that much of VW's sales progress in 2009 can be credited to the success of government scrappage schemes that was particularly beneficial to the Wolfsburg-based firm.

Despite the end of the programmes in September, the German market saw a 26 per cent growth in the registration of new vehicles in October, which go hand-in-hand with the report that VW Group sales for 2009 are up by 34 per cent in the first nine months of the year.

But it should also be noted that Toyota slashed its production substantially as the automotive crisis was at its worst during the end of 2009 and beginning of 2009. It's likely that once the storm has passed, Toyota will regain its title as number one.

Hi there. Just want to say the new site looks great. Thanks for moving the News to the left as default when entering the page. Concerning the article, I'm glad for VW as I think the mixture of VW, Lamborghini, Porsche, Audi, Seat, etc. can only help to better each branch of the overall group, and I see a exciting future for VW! Will definitely miss the Citi Golf as an entry level option. Let's hope there will come a replacement to help the lower income groups.

The Toyopets out there are going to be all 'angried-up' about this. I can just hear their first line of defence now: "Size is not everything you know"! LOL!! Indeed. Realistically though, does it matter which company is the largest in terms of either production or even sales? That means nothing to the consumer on the ground, as both companies produce some very good models (e.g. Lexus SC and VW Golf V) but also some real under-achievers (e.g. Lexus GS and VW Toureg) in terms of quality and reliability (Source: US Consumer Reports 2009 Auto Reliability Survey). So at the end of the day, it's not the size of the company that you're buying from but the quality of the specific model (of ANY brand) that you're buying that needs to be borne in mind.

Merlin, Consumer Reports is not an accepted authority on reliability- their methodology is questionable and they are not open on the raw data on which they base their judgements. Their sample size and the sample population they used has also been questioned. As far as I am aware it is simply NOT true that VW is the biggest car maker. According to Autocar the production numbers are as follows:- General Motors: 4.565 Million VW Group: 4.4 Million Toyota Motor Company: 4.0 Million Ford Motor Company: 3.7 Million http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/244746/ The reason for the difference is that the GM number excludes various GM Joint Ventures whose numbers are contractually part of GMs sales. So the Yanks still rule, although not for much longer I'm sure.

With cars like the new Golf, new Polo,Jetta,Passat ,CC,Eos,and Tiguan, this comes as no suprise,as all are selling well worldwide. Beetle needs to be updated, and Touareg is feeling the heat from the worldwide recession.
