VW's new Polo is here!

Much-anticipated new Polo has finally arrived in South Africa

This is the description of the media involved in the media container above.

An undoubted staple of the South African new car market for well over a decade, the Volkswagen Polo is now in its fifth generation (third generation in SA) and judging by the success of its predecessors and improved quality, looks set to take over the reigns as a bestseller once again.

Manufactured at Volkswagen's Uitenhage production plant for the local market as well as for export to global right-hand drive markets including Australia, Ireland, Japan, Ireland and the United Kingdom, production of the new Polo is part of VWSA's multi-billion rand investment in South African facilities - enabling the local establishment to build cars that comply with ever-increasing worldwide quality standards.

Styled from the new "Design DNA" conceived by VW Group design guru Walter d'Silva, the new Polo is defined up front by the same flat grille and sleek headlamps that first appeared on the new Scirocco in 2008.

Short overhangs and a single character line along the lower half of the doors particularly dominate the profile, while the rear end is quite unremarkable, save for the distinctive square tail lights. The new Polo measures 3 970 mm in length, is 1 682 mm wide and 1 453 mm high - 54 mm longer, 32 mm wider and 13 mm lower than before.

The engine line-up consists of three four-cylinder units, two petrol engines and a turbodiesel powerplant. The base engine, the 1,4i, produces 63 kW at 5 000 r/min and 132 N.m at 5 000 r/min, while the 1,6i produces 77 kW at 5 250 r/min and 155 N.m of torque at 3 500 r/min. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, but is optional on a 1,6i in Comfortline trim.

The 1,6-litre TDI with Diesel Particulate Filter produces 77 kW and 250 N.m of torque between 1 500 and 2 500 r/min. Fully compliant with Euro 5 emissions standards, the 1,6 TDI's average fuel consumption is claimed to be 4,2-litres/100 km and it emits just 109 grams of CO2 per km.

The new Polo's revised chassis features a MacPherson strut front suspension, semi-independent set-up at the rear and a wider track front and rear for improved dynamics. ESP with hill-hold is standard on the 1,6 TDI Comfortline and optional on the 1,6i Comfortline. Other safety features like ABS brakes, brake assist, anti-slip regulation electronic limited-slip differential and engine braking control is standard across the range.

The new Polo's higher structural rigidity, improved pedestrian safety and highly-efficient restraint systems contribute to its Euro NCAP rating of five stars - not only the safest Polo ever, but definitely one of the safest in its class.

I think the new Polo is GORGEOUS! Seeing as though some people complain about the back lights I take it they drive behind one and not in front!

Looks great and has already scooped some awards, but where's the Vivo, for budget minded folk....?

Nice looking little car but the VW Car prices are to high, you get nothing for it, VW is a great brand but i'll never pay that, they are nuts!!! Sorry VW, !!!

All 16v engines, save for the diesel of course... interesting. Would love to see a 1.4TSi in the mix - and where's the Gti :-)

All the Petrol engines are basically the same as the first Polo's that came to SA in the 90's.. Obviously they're reliable and all, but I expected newer technology engines like the ones you will find in the same class Toyota, Honda ,Ford, Suzuki Swift etc. I allso hoped to see more airbags. Lower specs on the sa models compered to european spec level and ironicly they were all made in sa!!!

Is there a hatchback model only at the moment or have any of you seen the sedan yet

Nice car, like most VW\'s. Would certainly have bought one if it wasn\'t for the poor after sales service. Don\'t understand why VW allow their excellent product\'s name to be tarnished with such poor service. Surely it must affect sales

Hey what's up with the 1.4i, are we supposed to be getting the TSi engines now? Come on VW, you are still offering service plans as an extra?

I look at this car and I see something ugly. The competition like the modern and beautiful Ford Fiesta, attractive Renault Clio III and Citroen C3 and the cute Toyota Yaris leave it by miles!!

Made in PE, second last on JD Power quality survey, hope manufactured quality will be up with the imported contenders. CAR mag's editorials always a bit biest, go and test drive the rest your self.

The same old engine.....? Try compare it to a Fiesta 1.6 Trend with spec and performance, good luck there VW

(not only the safest Polo ever, but definitely one of the safest in its class) All its contenders are on 5 star NCAP level for years now...

\'\'A five-speed manual transmission is standard, but is optional on a 1,6i in Comfortline trim\'\', WOW!!!!! Does the 1,6i comes standard with a 4sp....

Whats the difference between these engines and the previous models ones? Why don't they include a service plan standard in the price at least to 60 000km.

Looks a bit like the Golf from the front. Overall looks are good. I still love my 2003 1,4 litre 3 cylinder TDI - 2003 Car of the Year. It has lots of voomah especially up hills and for overtaking. The approx 45 litre fuel tank gives me regularly 850+ kms round town and the best I've has was 1002 Kms with 50+kms remaining accoding to the Computer. The handling is brilliant too. In the past I've owned Golf 2, 3 and 4, the latter traded-in for the Polo TDI, and I was amazed that each model was so improved from the last one, especially the handling. The Golf 3 suspension was a bit on the soft side and one could get the mud flaps to touch ground which sound was amplified through the body panel and this certainly got ones passengers adrenaline flowing! The handling was fine if you didn't mind some body roll - not a problem having had some Alfa's in my past too. Being a keen offroader now waiting to sample the Amarok. Brgds John

will have to really see it ,then would make up my mine ,i am still enjoying my 1.9tdi sportline ,i think its still has a good look to it.

Is the figures correct for the 1.6i ? Doesn't 77kw of power come from the 16 valve engine ? The Polo GTi will most likely be introduced with the 1.4 TSI +-110-118kw engine. VW has also developed a 1.2 TSI turbo only 77kw engine with ultra low fuel consumption.

Looks like the Polo has grown up, don\'t really like the rear though, a bit bland. Optional service plan is really milking the customers though. Apart for that it gets a thumbs up from me
Posted by: Nishan
Looking GOOD !!! Pointless for me to say it is expensive because ALL cars are expensive. But this will again outsell all its rivals, lets hope VW SA will serve their customers well when it comes to supporting this vehicle.
Posted by: HugoHero
Why is it that the 1.6 engine has all but been dropped from the golf range, but it is good enough for the polo? VW should have replaced it with the 1.4TSI engine rather.
Posted by: Kevin
service plan, need to be standard!!! For the rest magic!!!
Posted by: john
THE REAR IS REALY UGLY!!!!! Much better the Fiesta, Peugeot 207 or Honda Jazz!
Posted by: Aida Danif
Not for me. Too simple and without pepper! Too much VW lines. A smaller Golf. Not succeded in Europe.
Posted by: Miguel
And what is wrong with a GAY rear light?
Posted by: Gerhard
Brilliant! Like a smaller Golf 6. Best in class rated by ALL British Car Magazines. (South African in Scotland)

Why no service plan, I have the current one and as well no service plan, services are astronimical where as other makes of vehicles have service plans, come on vw make a plan.
Posted by: craig pretorius
nice one.
Posted by: Anonymous
I would buy one in a flash if it werent for the UGLY back lights !!!!!
Posted by: kiron hanuman
You're right, 20 valve for life. The Yaris looks MUCH better, right?
Posted by: TDi
Great to see that you remain so current with your information...Volkswagen's call centre yesterday could provide no information, yet alone pricing, on the new Polo!
Posted by: James
Great product - pity about how they will treat you on the service and if you have a problem though
Posted by: semaarnet
looks gay enough as its predecessor...........!!!!
Posted by: lj
Looks like another excellent VW
Posted by: Robbie
It looks like another piece of krap. Just look at that GAY rear lights. Yuck.
