Although we are quick to link performance Imprezas with Subaru’s STI products, there has been a couple of Imprezas that didn’t need the STI nameplate to offer memorable levels of performance. The Impreza 2,0 GT that we tested in February 1996 is one of them.
Even by today’s standards, the performance generated by the 2,0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine is not to be sniffed at. Developing 155 kW at 6 000 r/min and 270 N.m at 4 800 r/min, these power figures is not too dissimilar to that of the current VW Golf GTI.
Back then, our test team was able to launch the Impreza – with the help of its all-wheel-drive system – to 100 km/h in an impressive 6,39 seconds.
