From the venerated C63 AMG to the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL that started it all, the Mercedes AMG division has consistently pushed the envelope and delivered truly breathtaking cars over the years.
In celebration of over half a century of continuous success, a few monikers within the AMG stables have received special editions commemorating the divisions 55th birthday. The first car to undergo this transformation was the AMG G63 followed by an otherworldly rendition of the AMG GT which birthed the Mercedes AMG GT Track Series. Adding to the special “Edition 55” moniker, the AMG A35 4Matic and CLA 35 4Matic will receive a special trim to commemorate the past 55 years.
The powertrain has seen no changes or improvements, but that doesn’t mean the car hasn’t had any ‘performance’ modifications. The “Edition 55” models are equipped with the AMG Aerodynamics Package, which has been wind tunnel tested to ensure that the additional aerodynamic pieces aid in improving the driving experience and performance of the car. This package includes a front apron with a larger front splitter and canards. The AMG rear wing, side spoiler lips, rear apron, and Blade diffuser are all painted in a high-gloss black.
The cars sit on 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels with a matt titanium grey finish that are highlighted by a high-sheen rim flange for added contrast. The special editions are available in either a black metallic paint finish or digital white metallic. The AMG emblem is displayed on each side of the car fades from a titanium grey finish until it becomes transparent.
The “Edition 55” models will be fitted with the AMG Night Package and the AMG Night Package 2. A slew of pieces on the cars, such as the front splitter, louvres, air intakes, and much more have been painted in a similar high-gloss black found on the additional aerodynamic elements included in the AMG Aerodynamics Package. Additionally, the tailpipes have been given a black chrome trim and the windows are tinted and provide better heat insulation.
The cabin has contrasting red and black accents and stitching. The seats are the firm’s performance seats and are wrapped in two-tone red and black leather. The DINAMICA microfibre steering wheel features an “Edition 55” badge. The “Edition55” emblem is strewn across the interior from the footwells to the steering wheel is finished in brushed aluminum. The fuel cap has the AMG emblem engraved on it.
The model is being sold exclusively within the European market with no confirmation on whether it will make its way down to South Africa. A standard A-Class fetches north of R1 million. The Mercedes AMG Editon 55 models will cost roughly R212 108 on top of the base model cost.
