Offroad Alfa on the cards

Alfa Romeo plans to add an SUV to its line up by 2010 in a bid to bolster its return to the US market next year.

In an interview with , Company CEO Luca de Meo confirmed that a crossover SUV is in the works. Code-named CX-over and based on the 2003 Kamal Concept, this model has been slated to emerge sometime in 2010 as a vital part of Alfa’s return to the US market next year.

The production vehicle is expected to undergo several stylistic changes, including stacked circular brake lights, rounder headlights, and the latest iteration of Alfa’s signature grille – renderings from take in these design elements and give a good indication of how the new vehicle will look. Both three- and five-door versions of the CX-over are expected to make production.

The CX-over is expected to be based on the 159 platform, which already supports Alfa’s Q4 all-wheel-drive system and can accommodate a number of petrol and diesel powerplants, including the company’s 3,2-litre V6. Upon its arrival, the CX-over will go up against some tough competition including such prestige German compact SUVs as the Mercedes GLK, BMW X3, Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi’s Q5.

In addition to the SUV, Luca de Meo has also confirmed that Alfa will develop a start-stop engine system. There is a possibility that this unit will be augmented by a hybrid powerplant borrowed from parent company Fiat, but de Meo is adamant that the hybrid will only make an appearance at a later stage and Alfa will not turn into an eco-centric brand.
