Porsche’s 911 Turbo was (and still is) widely regarded as the ultimate supercar with everyday comfort and cruising ability. But for those wanting just a little bit more from their Porsche experience, there was the 996 GT2…
The previous generation 993 GT2 never reached CAR’s offices, so we had to wait until January 2003 to test its successor, the 996 GT2. Powered by the same twin-turbocharged 3,6-litre flat-six motor that did service in the 911 Turbo of the time, the GT2 boasted a few tweaks to take its peak outputs up to 340 kW, developed at 5 700 r/min, with 620 N.m of torque available between 3 500 and 4 500 r/min.
As the fastest road-going Porsche of its day (before the V10-engined Carrera GT was launched), its performance at the time was astounding, accelerating to 100 km/h from rest in just 4,13 seconds and went on to a top speed of 310 km/h on CAR’s test strip (Porsche claimed 315 km/h was possible, but we ran out of space on our test strip).
