Renault’s Scénic range can be credited with inventing the compact MPV segment. Since its introduction in the mid-90s, some 3,9 million units have been sold worldwide. The third generation of this successful model range has just undergone a facelift and is now available on the local market.
Sleeker styling
The new front-end visage is far more aggressive than the one it replaces. New headlamps, LED day-time running lamps and chrome accents are far more distinctive and add an air of sportiness to the package. Viewed from straight ahead the five-seat Scenic and seven-seat Grand Scénic are further differentiated by model-specific lower bumper detailing.
On the Grand Scénic the lower chrome beam runs the width of the car whereas on the Scenic this element takes on a trapezoidal shape. Of course the differences are immediately apparent in profile where the seven-seater’s longer silhouette is evident.
From behind the wheel a revised instrument cluster takes pride of place on the facia. The all-digital readout is in full-colour and looks good next to the navigation screen. It does, however, require a little acclimatisation to look down and across to see the vital info as opposed to just casting your eyes down as with most other cars.
Feature laden
The new range of Scénic models is chock-full of features, with even the base model boasting standard specification that will trump much bigger executive models. Among the standard items is a full suite of safety items such as ABS with EBD, ESP and Hill Start Assist. No fewer than six airbags (front, side and curtain) are found across the range.
From a modern convenience point of view there is keyless entry as standard, Bluetooth enabled audio system, auto headlights and wipers, rear park distance control, air-conditioning and even a Carminat TomTom Live integrated navigation system specified across all three models. Models higher up the range, such as the 1,6 dCi and 2,0 dCi add further items such as dual-zone climate control and electrically operated and heated front seats.
New powerplant
For those interested in petrol power there just one option is on offer: the 1,6 Expression. A new 1,6 turbodiesel engine makes its local debut in the 1,6 dCI Dynamique. The range is topped off by a 2,0 dCi Bose model.
The smaller of the two diesel models is the one I drove on the launch event last week. From behind the wheel drivers are hard-pressed to guess the engine size. This little unit produces 96 kW and a healthy 320 N.m of torque from 1 750 r/min.
The engine pulls smooth and strongly from low revs, but I really think that it should be allied with an auto transmission as opposed to the six-speed manual that is currently available. Not that there is anything fundamentally wrong with the manual gearbox; I just feel that the narrow powerband of a turbodiesel is more suited to a self-shifter.
Despite the notable power outputs the engine is said to consume just 4,4 litres/100 km in the combined fuel cycle. This equates to a CO2 emissions output of just 114 g/km.
Smooth cruiser
As was always the case, the Scénic proved to have a smooth ride that is typical of French vehicles. Renault have kept the springing on the softer side and tuned the suspension for a relaxed gait that makes the vehicle pleasurable to drive and be driven in.
Summary
Renault’s Scénic has always been an impressive vehicle. It is full of standard features that are usually found as optional extras in other brands. Two body sizes ensure that all family sizes are catered for and a relaxed ride cater for all the mum’s taxi duties. Thanks to Renault’s less than sterling dealer level record there aren’t as many of these stylish MPVs around as there deserves to be.
Renault are working hard to rectify the wrongs of its recent past; a five year/100 000 km service plan and a five year/150 000 km roadside assistance package included in the standard price should create some peace of mind. If you are convinced by the promises made by the parent company then a Scénic should definitely be on your short list if you are shopping in this segment.
