Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG
by CAR Magazine on 09/04/2008
Mercedes has dubbed it “A C-Class like never before”, and rightly so! The C63 AMG is the most powerful iteration of the company’s acclaimed compact executive saloon and has just been launched on the local market.Available in both sedan and estate versions, the top C-Class model is powered by an AMG 6,2-litre V8 engine that develops 336 kW at 6 800 r/min and a maximum torque of 600 N.m at 5 000 r/min. This high-revving, naturally aspirated engine propels the C63 from zero to 100 km/h in just 4,5 seconds and on to an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h. The C63 AMG Estate, which will be launched later this year, manages to crack the 0-100 km/h run in just 4,6 seconds – impressive stuff for a load lugger.
Like all of AMG’s high-performance engines, the AMG 6,2-litre V8 is built in Affalterbach’s AMG engine shop on the traditional "one man, one engine" principle. This means that one technician is responsible for hand-assembling a complete V8 engine to the highest quality standards – which is attested to by their signature on the AMG engine plate.
The engine is mated with an AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic gearbox. Equipped with AMG steering-wheel shift paddles and featuring three drive programmes, this seven-speed automatic caters for every driving style: from refined cruising to seriously sporty driving. The new revving function when changing down ensures that the engine remains in the optimum rev range when tackling demanding roads.
The C63 AMG’s braking system consists of internally ventilated disc brakes all round with ABS, Brake Assist augmented by a 3-stage ESP system.
The C63 AMG plays host to a completely new-design three-link front suspension with a wider track and new speed-sensitive AMG sports steering for high-speed cornering and great agility. The firm-setting springs and gas-filled shock absorbers on the all-new AMG sports suspension ensure optimum contact with the road and helps to contain body movement under rigorous cornering.
The speed-sensitive AMG sports steering benefits from improved kinematics, a more rigid disc in the steering column and modified steering characteristics that improves steering feel and precision.
The C63 AMG differentiates itself from its lesser siblings courtesy of AMG body styling. Up front, the C63 AMG features twin power domes on the bonnet, AMG radiator grille and flared front wings that accommodate a 35 mm wider front track. The rear sports an AMG apron with black diffuser insert, an AMG sports exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes and the AMG spoiler lip.
The cabin features sports seats with integrated head restraints, the AMG performance steering wheel in a three-spoke design with a flattened lower section as well as the tubular-design instrument cluster with its AMG main menu.
