A few years ago, I took up boxing. “Midlife crisis” was the family consensus, one usually o ered with a communal rolling of eyes. Entering the ring as Steve “The Word” Smith, I had one public fight and, to be honest, I wasn’t very good.

What struck me during the training was that there were two kinds of people in the rather swanky boxing gym I had joined. One bunch was there to challenge themselves and learn new skills. I was one of these guys. We didn’t really like getting hit in the face much, but hey, it’s good to push
yourself from time to time. The other bunch … now, these guys didn’t mind getting hit and, more than that, they really liked hitting us.

The two supercars we test in this issue echo that scenario, not only because the debate around the winner almost saw Terence “Stick & Move” Steenkamp and Nicol “Low Blow” Louw square up to each other, but the cars represent two very different approaches to a mid-engined, highperformance vehicle.

Both the Audi R8 V10 Plus and the McLaren 570S are blindingly quick, but one is genuinely useable as an everyday driver, while the other will deck you with a left-hook-right-uppercut should your concentration slip. You can read more about this highly anticipated bout on page 72.
