The next event takes place at Aldo Scribante on 29 September, where the first turn has developed a notorious reputation. Opening-lap mayhem is a common occurrence in Port Elizabeth and should such an incident occur the race victory could be open to any number of challengers.
Castrol BMW 330i driver Etienne van der Linde has first-hand experience of the carnage that can occur in Port Elizabeth. “In 2006 there was a huge pile-up at turn 1 with half of the field becoming casualties. I was hit from behind, my car spun around and I was stuck in the middle of the track, facing oncoming traffic. It could have been nasty if I had been hit, but the guys all managed to go around me. We’ve had an incident-filled season thus far but hopefully we won’t have such a dramatic start to the race this time out.”
Also looking for a clean run to the flag will be teammate Anthony Taylor. The former champ has had a disappointing season this year but will want to turn his fortunes around in PE.
“The four-wheel drive cars have really come on strong in recent races,” explains Taylor. “They gain a great deal off the start line, leaving us with a lot of work to do in the race. But, having said that, we’re anticipating a much closer contest in PE following some dramatic testing improvements that will hopefully pay off.”
Clint Weston in the third BMW Castrol 330i is looking forward to getting his first taste of Aldo Scribante in a Class A car. “I’m obviously familiar with the circuit, having raced many other cars there, but this will be my first Class A race at PE. I’m looking forward to it and hope to get up to speed quickly,” he comments.
“After our least successful season in recent times, after dominating South African Production Car racing for so long, it is really important to finish the season with some good solid results,” continues Danie Human, BMW Motorsport Manager. “There are now just three rounds remaining on this year’s calendar and though we are not in contention for the championship we would like to get some victories under our belt and finish the season on a high note. Hopefully, after all the development work we’ve done, we can notch up the first one for 2007 at Aldo!”
