There are few manufactures that have such a significant and detailed presence through the years at the 24 Hours of Le Mans than Porsche.
The company entered this race for the first time in 1951 with its 356 SL that used a 1 086 cm3 engine, just enough to propel this racecar to a top speed of 160 km/h. From this date up to 2010, author Glen Smale in his book Posche at Le Mans covers ever year in detail, both factory teams as well as privateers.
Being a coffee table book, the focus is mostly on pictures and here the selection by Smale doesn’t disappoint. It is especially the first couple of decades that impress the most with extraordinary pictures supplied by Porsche.
Every year is accompanied by a sufficient amount of text that sums up the specific race. There is even the odd interview by those that raced these cars. As can be expected, all the results are also included about each race while there is more than enough technical details on the racecars.
Unfortunately, this book was published before Porsche’s announcement that it will return to Le Mans in 2014. Nevertheless, if you are a Porsche or Le Mans enthusiast, this book should form part of your collection.
