Altogether 42 of the entries have come from regular national competitors, while the rest of the entries are from competitors competing in the TOTAL Western Cape Regional Championship. The current SA Champions, Enzo Kuun/Guy Hodgson in a BP VW Class S2000 Polo will be first on the road when the event starts at the Killarney Race Track on Friday 21 September at noon.
He will be followed by multiple SA Champion, Serge Damseaux and co-driver, Robert Paisley, in a Team Castrol Class S2000 Toyota RunX. Third on the road will be Etienne Lourens/Andre Vermeulen in a Team TOTAL Class S2000 Toyota RunX.
It is the first time that the Swartland Rally will be held, after Subaru South Africa withdrew their sponsorship from the event at the end of last year. TOTAL who has had a long association with motorsport in the Western Cape stepped into the breach to sponsor the event.
Altogether five stages will be held on Friday 21 September. Two of the stages will be on gravel near Moorreesburg, before the competitors return to Killarney to complete three tar stages around the race track. The last two stages will be super specials.
On Saturday 22 September another five stages will be held. Four will be gravel stages around the Moorreesburg area with a central service park at the Moorreesburg Showgrounds. The last stage of the rally will be at Killarney. Saturday’s stages include three long gravel stages, the longest being the penultimate stage that will be 49,09 km in length.
The total special stage distance on the Friday is 65,40 and on Saturday 131,88 giving a total special stage length for the rally of 197,15 km. According to the Clerk of the Course, Robert Marle of the Cape Peninsula Motorcycle and Car Club, the organisers of the rally, the roads can be somewhat rough after all the rain that has fallen in the Western Cape in recent months.
“Some of the farmers have indicated that they will try and repair most of the damage done to the roads. At the moment it is very difficult to predict whether it is going to rain or whether it will be dry. Competitors will have to come prepared for whatever weather conditions they may experience on the day”, he said.
