Nissan has jumped on the DeltaWing racecar project and has agreed to supply its 1,6-litre DIG-T (Direct Injection Gasoline Turbocharged) engine.
This tweaked engine produces in the region of “only” 224 kW – a good deal less power than other Le Mans racers. But the Nissan DeltaWing car is much lighter and has half of the aerodynamic drag than the LMP1 and LMP2 cars.
Backed by Highcroft Racing and All American Racers, the DeltaWing will compete in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans in June. It is a special 56th entry that is only given to “a vehicle showcasing new applications and unique technologies previously unseen in the world’s greatest endurance race”. As a result, DeltaWing’s race effort is known as Project 56.
Driving this racecar for the 24 Hours of Le Mans will be British sportscar racer Marino Franchitti and Nissan’s reigning FIA GT1 World Champion Michael Krumm. The public can expect to catch a first glimpse of this car at Sebring, Florida, on 15 March when it will do demo laps.
