Stiff competition marked round four of the Engen Volkswagen Cup championship at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday. Both pole positions were claimed in the top six qualifiers’ draw by Bryan Morgan who immediately came under fire at the start of race one by Mark Silverwood.
The first challenge, off the start line, was successfully fended off by Morgan, but repeated pressure from Silverwood resulted in him claiming the lead. While champonship leader Kosie Weyers looked fairly comfortable in third, it was not to last. Here Dewald Brummer was in a bullish mood, pushing through to claim the last of the podium places.
Masters’ racer Etienne du Toit claimed first in this category for race one and third in race two. The second race victory in the category went to Eddie Rodrigues.
Race two again saw Silverwood make the move on pole starter Morgan to claim the lead and championship leader Kosie Weyers also pushed his nose past to take second place. This relegated Morgan to a third place finish – good enough for second place overall on the day.
With two race victories under his belt, Silverwood emerged as the overall winner for the day with Weyers in third. Double victories on race day seem to becoming habit for the Engen Volkswagen Cup field as Weyers has claimed two and Silverwood a third. Only round one saw a different winner in each of the races.
In the Masters category it was Etienne du Toit first for the day with Juan Gerber in second and Eddie Rodrigues in third spot.
