Post-Zwartkops the Engen Volkswagen Cup championship has just two rounds left in the 2014 season – both of which are going to be extremely tense.
The big winner at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday was Dewald Brummer who won both races and claimed overall victory for the day. This was enough to push him up to joint second-place with Daniel Rowe – and the pair are just six points behind championship leader Sheldon van der Linde.
Van der Linde is unlikely to make things easy on anyone chasing him for the 2014 title, and with two second place finishes at the Zwartkops round, he can still set the pace for the remaining races. Having snatched the title from Rowe at the Zwartkops round, Van der Linde could find the battle for second working to his advantage, creating some clear air that will allow him to increase his lead.
The Masters category sees the battle between Trevor Bland and Mathew Hodges also heating up. Hodges beat Bland in the overall standings at Zwartkops and has slightly narrowed the gap – but Juan Gerber finished first overall in the Masters and could be mounting a late charge which would put Bland and Hodges under pressure and turn the final round into a three-way fight for honours.
Then Engen Volkswagen Cup racers will take to Killarney on Saturday, September 27, for the penultimate round of the championship – which promises to be another two races of door-denting, bumper-bashing and side-mirror sacrificing motorsport action.
This will be the second time this season that this single-make series has competed at Killarney this year.
