S.A. Superbike “hotshot” privateer Suzuki rider, Graeme van Breda, was last night named as the 2002 Sasol SAGMJ “Top Gun” of the Year, winning R15 000 in prize money and a handsome trophy from Sasol. –
– “This competition has been about grit and determination, often in trying circumstances, and not only about success on the track,” said Andre de Kock, convener of the SAGMJ panel of judges. –
– “Graeme more than fulfilled these considerations. Mid-way through the year, soon after receiving the Sasol SAGMJ “Top Gun Award” for May, he lost his main sponsor (who closed down business). He, however, persevered on a shoe-string budget, often taking on the works teams, as he did in the final race at A.A. Kyalami this weekend when he finished 3rd in the wet,” he added. –
– Van Breda received the overall award from Sasol Sponsorship Manager, Pano Nicolopulos, ahead of stiff competition from fellow Superbike racers Noel Haarhoff, Shaune Whyte, Dino de Wet and Arushen Moodley, Formula Ford contenders Robert Wolk and Michael Atkins, and WesBank Samcar’s Hennie Groenewald and Mackie Adlem, the latter the winner for the month of November. –
– The respective “Top Guns” of the day at the final Vodacom Power Tour meeting this weekend were: Clinton Pienaar (Superbikes), Garth Waberski (Formula Ford) and Adlem (WesBank Samcar). –
