Round two of the Sasol Rally Championship was won by the class S2000 Castrol Toyota RunX of multiple champion Serge Damseaux and Robert Paisley from the S2000 BP Volkswagen Polo of Enzo Kuun and Guy Hodgson. A surprise third and first in the production car category was the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6 of Paul Pfeiffer and Duncan English.
Highest placed overall among the large Team Total contingent was the S2000 Toyota RunX of Etienne Lourens and Andre Vermeulen, who finished fourth overall and third in class. They broke a right rear shock absorber in stage two on Friday. When the new shocks brought along as spares were unwrapped, they turned out to be the wrong size and had to be modified. This resulted in the team incurring 11 min of lateness and effectively ruled them out of contention.
Class winners for Team Total were Chris de Wit and Patrick Yende in their class N3 Toyota RunX, who finished 10th overall. Former class champion Rodney Visagie and Arno le Grange were second in their Toyota RunX and 11th overall.
Reigning class A6 champions Craig Trott and John Costa (Toyota RunX) were provisionally first but were later excluded for a technical infringement, the win eventually going to the Toyota Corolla of Schalk Burger and Wimpie van Greunen.
Salie du Toit and Gert van Rensburg were 10th overall in their Team Total Subaru Impreza WRX STi.
Class A5 champions Michael Houghton and Bryn Docherty, winners of their class in the opening rally of the season in KwaZulu Natal in their Team Total Toyota Tazz, had to settle for second on this occasion behind Etienne Malherbe and Hennie Botes (Toyota Tazz).
Vusi Mabanga and Bongi Nkonyana produced an excellent result in their Team Total Toyota Tazz, finishing fifth in class A5. Nkonyana, a supply officer at Total was competing in his first rally.
Unluckiest of all the Team Total non-finishers was the Toyota RunX of Jean-Pierre Damseaux and Cobus Very. They were leading class A7 by two and a half minutes with just three kilometres of the last stage remaining when they suffered a broken ball joint. The class win went to Charl Wilken and Greg Godrich in their Castrol Toyota RunX.
The other Team Total non-finishers were Fernando Rueda/Martin Botha (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8), engine, SS6; Eugene Lourens (Toyota Conquest), gearbox, SS6; Lola/Megan Verlaque (Subaru Impreza), no brakes, SS1; Mohammed Moosa (Toyota RunX) engine, SS8; and Nicholas Ryan (Subaru Impreza) turbo, SS9.
