Local lad Kosie Weyers dominated both Engen Volkswagen Cup races at Killarney this weekend and walked away with a 27-point lead in the championship. The wins weren’t clear-cut though. Weyers, who started race one from second on the grid, had to steal the lead from Shaun La Reservée. La Reservée hounded Weyers for the remaining eight laps and briefly took the lead at Turn 5, but Weyers eventually crossed the line just 0,095 seconds ahead of his closest rival.
Tasmin Pepper, who had an on-track scuffle with Bryan Morgan, earned her first podium of the year by finishing third in race one. In race two Weyers was the hottest off the blocks, this time from third on the grid, and grabbed the lead. He was pursued by Mathew Hodges, but could not be caught as he dropped the hammer and took another convincing win. Trevor Bland took the final podium spot ahead of Mark Silverwood and La Reservée.
In the Masters category, Eddie Rodrigues also managed to take home maximum points by finishing first in his class in both races. Ettiene du Toit and Gerhard Henning took second and third in both races respectively. The next round of the Engen Volkswagen Cup will be held at Aldo Scribante Raceway in Port Elizabeth on April 6.
