The South African Single-Seater racers opened the season at Zwartkops Raceway in March, returning there this past Saturday for another round of the Super Series.
Robert Wolk took control of the series at the outset this year, but now finds himself having to wrest the lead back from Nicholas van Weely. This second outing at the Zwartkops circuit has allowed Wolk to close the gap to the championship leader to just four points, so the title fight should go right down to the final round.
Wolk certainly showed his pace at this event when he was forced to start from the back of the grid in race one, but managing to claw his way through the order to take the race victory. He then went on to win the second race of the day as well to show he has the title firmly in focus.
Van Weely kept his consistent pace, finishing second in each of the two races to retain his lead. Two more good rounds – four races – is all he needs to take the title. Even one single point ahead of the defending champion will be enough to add his name to the list of title winners in this open-wheel series.
Mathew Merton and Werner Scholtz alternated for third place finishes at the Zwartkops round but are likely to be fighting just as hard as the leaders when the field heads to Killarney for the penultimate round of the season. These open-wheel racers competed round two of the season in the Cape at the end of March.
In the Midas Formula 1600 class it was a rather different affair with not one racer appearing on the podium twice during the race day. In the first race victory went to Bevan Williams when an incident between Scott Temple and Keegan Campos saw Temple finish way down the order and Campos receive a penalty which took him off the podium. Here second and third place were snapped up by Graham Hepburn and Andrew Horne.
Race two saw a return to the more usual line-up in this category with Temple finishing first, followed by Campos and Bevan Williams crossing the line for third place.
