In recent months we have seen a spate a new S and RS models being released by Audi. For our annual Performance Shootout we tested the blistering RS7, and in 2014 we have already experienced no less than three models, the S3 hatchback, SQ5 TDI and the RS Q3.
However, a spokesperson for Audi South Africa confirmed to CAR magazine that another addition to the RS line up is currently under review – the mighty Audi RS6 Avant. Only available as an estate, the RS6 is powered by the same 4,0-litre, biturbo V8 engine (412 kW/700 N.m) which can be found in the RS7.
Also equipped with Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system, the RS6 accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 3,9 seconds.
So why consider it now? Well, it seems South Africans have a strong liking for the RS brand. Audi wants to sell 40 RS7s a year, and even before the car was launched it had 30 pre-orders. This was also the case with the RS Q3. The company wants to sell 150 annually and had 100 pre-orders.
If, or should we say when, Audi South Africa decide to bring the RS6 Avant to our local market, expect to see the local introduction in 2015. Together with the E63 AMG Estate, it will be one of the fastest wagons on our market.
