It was only back in January that we drove the new BMW 2 Series (follow the links for our road test and track test). The highlight of the range is undoubtedly the wonderful M235i. However, for those individuals that would rather prefer to have the cabin drenched in sunlight, BMW has now revealed the 2 Series Convertible.
Following the spy pictures, there is not a lot of surprises. As with the previous 1 Series Convertible, BMW has opted for a cloth roof configuration. Compared to its 1 Series Convertible predecessor, the 2 Series Convertible is bigger: length increased by 72 millimetres to 4 432 millimetres, width by 26 millimetres to 1 774 millimetres, wheelbase by 30 to 2 690 millimetres, front track by 41 to 1 521 millimetres and rear track by 43 to 1 556 millimetres. Not only does this mean there is more space inside, by the luggage compartment can now swallow more kit with the roof up or down. Even though the car’s footprint is larger, torsional rigidity has increased by about 20%.
Being a convertible, it is always important to be able to open or close the roof as quickly as possible. This roof can be opened or closed in 20 seconds, and at speeds of up to 50 km/h.
The range consists of the 220d, 220i, 228i and finally the range-topping M235i. These models, although not all of them, will be offered with packages called Advantage, Luxury Line, Sport Line and M Sport.
The 2 Series Convertible will be shown at the upcoming Paris Motor Show, followed by its local introduction during the first quarter of 2015.
