BMW has issued a global recall of some 250 000 examples of its X5 and X6 models, of which just over 5 000 are SA-based, to rectify a power steering fault.
This recall applies to xDrive35d diesel models produced between the 2009 and 2012 model years.
It centres on a bolt that holds a belt pulley that can potentially loosen and break, the upshot of which is the loss of power steering that could increase the risk of an accident. Although the afflicted vehicle would still have unassisted steering, manoeuvring will require greater effort on the part of the driver, especially at low speeds.
Currently BMW is unaware of any accidents arising from said fault, but a number of reports regarding such a problem have been filed with BMW dealers stateside.
From a local perspective, the recall will apply to 4 800-odd X5s and around 260 X6s.
BMW will notify owners of potentially affected vehicles to address the issue shortly.
