BMW’s facelifted X1 range will arrive in September 2012, bringing with it a host of exterior and interior design tweaks, a revised engine line-up and the introduction of new model lines and specification.
On the design front, the facelifted X1 features a revised headlamp design with integrated LED elements for the optional Xenon units, new foglamp surrounds, repeaters in the wing mirrors, a more prominent rear underguard and a reduction in the amount of plastic cladding on the car’s lower quarters.
The cabin features a newly designed centre console and attention has also been paid to the quality of trim materials. The facelift also sees BMW’s trim line system introduced to the X line-up for the first time, with xLine and Sport models now joining the standard offerings along with an optional M Sports package.
The local X1 line-up will comprise three diesels and four petrol models. On the diesel front, the sDrive20d and xDrive20d models are powered by 2,0-litre, four-cylinder common-rail turbodiesels developing 135 kW and 380 N.m of torque. The rear-wheel drive version returns 4,9-5,0L/100 km (six-speed manual vs. automatic) and emits 129-132 g/km of CO2. The all-wheel drive version returns 5,4-5,5 L/100 km and emits 143-145 g/km of CO2.
At the head of the diesel line-up is the xDrive25d with a turbocharged 2,0-litre unit developing 160 kW and 450 N.m of torque. This model sprints from 0-100 km/h in 6,8 seconds and returns 5,5-5,9L/100 km while emitting 145-154 g/km of CO2.
The petrol line-up will comprise the s Drive18i powered by a normally aspirated 2,0-litre engine with variable-valve timing (110 kW/200 N.m), the sDrive20i and xDrive20i both featuring the same engine but turbocharged to deliver 135 kW and 270 N.m of torque, as well as the petrol range-topping xDrive 28i with 180 kW and 350 N.m on tap – enough to despatch the 0-100 km/h sprint in 6,1 seconds. All of the engines are offered with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard and the option of an 8-speed automatic with the exception of the sDrive18i.
All of the aforementioned units are augmented by BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology that includes; start/stop for manuals and eight-speed automatic models, optional Eco Pro module to tailor throttle and transmission actions towards economy, gearshift indicator and disengageable A/C compressor.
The standard specification includes such features as climate control, electric heated mirrors, foglamps, onboard computer, plus sound system with CD player, aux-in connection and five speakers.
Among the optional extras are sat-nav with hard disk and iDrive operating system, Harman Kardon surround audio system, keyless entry, panoramic glass roof, automatically dimming exterior and rear-view mirrors, electrical seat adjustment, rain sensing wipers, heated steering wheel, auto lights with high beam assist, cruise control with braking function and tow bar. BMW’s Connected Drive module is also available and offers such functionality as in-car Internet access, extended smartphone functionality and BMW apps for web radio/Facebook/Twitter.
Pricing and further information will be made available closer to the official launch in September.
