Reports of BMW working on a new compact roadster have been doing the rounds for some time now, but it appears that a series of recent developments, both company and industry-inspired, are paving the way for what could be the long-awaited Z2.
Although BMW has not made a concrete statement that such a model is in the pipeline, a report from respected Stateside motoring publication, Car and Driver, suggests otherwise.
The folks at C&D cite a yawning gap in the Bavarian luxury carmaker’s product line-up for a no-frills, entry-level sportscar underpinned by the platform currently doing service in the Mini Roadster/Coupé (or the one underneath the upcoming 2 Series Active Tourer) and powered by a variety of three- and four-cylinder engines.
Such a model, should it see the light of day by 2016 as per C&D’s projection, will then have to feature a front-wheel drivetrain, a practical development that will sit uneasily with BMW purists.
