The next-generation Chevrolet Camaro won’t look too different from the current model, but the biggest changes will present themselves underneath the hood with the introduction of an optional four-cylinder engine.
The four-cylinder unit set to feature in the new Camaro is likely to be a version of the 2,0-litre turbocharged unit found in the Cadillac ATS and CTS, where it produces 204 kW and 400 Nm of torque. V6 and V8 engines should still feature in the new car.
With Ford’s 2015 Mustang’s 2,3-litre EcoBoost unit set to deliver more than 228 kW and 406 N.m, Chevrolet may have to tweak its engine to compete with those of the new Mustang.
The new Camaro will make use of General Motor’s Alpha platform and be based on the long-wheelbase version used on the Cadillac CTS.
The 2016 Camaro will come in at 2,9 meters, making it 5,8 cm longer than the current model and 19 cm longer than the 2015 Mustang. However, it is still slightly shorter than the current Dodge Challenger.
It is believed that the Camaro’s increased dimensions will allow room for a smaller sports car that could compete with the Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86 and the Mazda MX-5.
Set for public appearance in 2015, the new Camaro should go on sale later that year.
