Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton took a dominant win in the Volkswagen Rally. The Sasol Ford Team took four of the 12 special stages to end the event with a 36,1-second margin. Second across the finish line was the Castrol Toyota of Johnny Gemmell and Drew Sturrock.
The Sasol pair jump to third in the provisional championship standings.
"There were good roads on the rally and we made good time in the long stage of the first day," said Cronje. "The second day we were first on the road and that worked to our advantage. We didn’t expect to take 18 seconds off of Johnny in stage eight but it certainly helped to earn us the rally victory."
"This was a great rally," says Gemmell. "The Castrol Toyota Auris ran well, it didn’t miss a beat the whole event. We’re scoring good points at most events this season so we’re very happy thus far."
Enzo Kuun and Guy Hodgson in a BP-backed Volkswagen Polo Vivo S2000 claimed their third consecutive third-place finish, helping them to amass more valuable points in their quest for a successful championship-title defence.
"This is becoming serious business now," says Kuun. "We’re completely focused on the championship title and will be working hard to reach that goal."
Round Six of the eight-event championship takes place in the George and Knysna area of the Garden Route in the Western Cape on 26 and 27 August.
