External airbag

By: Nicol Louw

Volvo is well known for its technical achievements in vehicle safety. And now it’s achieved another world-first: its V40 will feature an external airbag for pedestrian protection. The airbag resides under the rear lip of the bonnet and, when a crash signal that resembles an impact with a pedestrian is received from the front bumper, the airbag will deploy and lift the bonnet upwards to reduce the impact. At the same time, it will also cover up to a third of the windscreen for further protection. In combination with Volvo’s radar-based crash-prevention system, the V40 might just be the most pedestrian-friendly car.
