GM Europe president Carl-Peter Forster recently said the next-generation Opel Corsa was one of “three important new products” that Opel/Vauxhall would launch in 2006, but didn’t reveal when the light car would make its début. But, the wait will soon be over…
During his opening address at the Geneva Show earlier this month, Forster told the media: “Opel/Vauxhall will launch three extremely important new products this year… The Astra Twin Top, all new Antara crossover vehicle and the next generation Corsa”.
The Twin Top and Antara were unveiled at last year’s Frankfurt Show and enthusiasts had hoped the new Corsa would make its début at Geneva. “There were a lot of rumours that we were going to show it (the new Corsa) to you in Geneva, (but) you will have to wait a bit longer to see the real thing,” Forster added.
It turns out Corsa fans will only have to wait four months… The fourth-generation Corsa will have its world launch at the British Show in London’s Docklands in July. The new car, Opel says, “will have stunning styling and an array of innovative technology features in a choice of three and five-door bodies”.
Apparently, the car’s designers “have given each three and five-door Corsa variant a unique look. Both versions will be on show in London”, a spokesman for Adam Opel AG said on Wednesday.
“The UK is Europe’s biggest market by some margin for the Corsa,” a spokesman said, “so it was a natural decision to choose the London Motor Show for the reveal.”
Given the new development, it’s almost certain that General Motors SA will exhibit the new Corsa at October’s Auto Africa Expo. The model is scheduled to go on sale in Europe in the final quarter of 2006… When will it arrive in South Africa? Watch this space.
