Ford’s Indian arm is recalling at least 111 000 examples of its Figo light car as part of a pre-emptive measure to rectify potentially faulty components that could cause mechanical breakdowns or present a fire risk. This recall will affect roughly 10 000 Figos on the South African market.
The recall will apply to Figo models built between January 2008 and February 2011. Ford has described the action, among the largest recall by an Indian manufacturer, as a “voluntary and pre-emptive” measure and claims that there have been no injuries related to the potential problems reported thus far.
The problems relate to a potentially faulty power steering hose that could leak and present a fire risk “in extreme cases” and a potential suspension fault resulting from a crack in the rear torsion beam. This malady apparently manifests itself with a very distinctive noise and cars continually driven in this condition could be rendered “inoperable”.
Of the roughly 111 000 car being recalled, all will be checked for the potential suspension fault and 17 665 units will receive replacement power steering hoses.
Ford SA should receive supplies of replacement parts by the end of August and will begin contacting the owners of affected cars directly from then.
