This week’s golden oldie test is from a bit further back in our archives than the previous ones. It’s a another South African special – the Mini 1000 “S”. Built by BMC works, which had set up shop in Blackheath in Cape Town, this Mini cost R1 450 at the coast and R1 483 at the reef when it was first available to South Africans in the late-1960s. After buidling a prototype, testing it and seeing what works and what doesn’t, the engineering team at BMC was able to wrangle 52 b.h.p. out of the four-cylinder 998 cc engine. When CAR tested this model in 1969, it was described as “A flashing, ultra-responsive car with plenty of built-in safety, great fun to drive, and definitely superior for commuting and everyday motoring”.
