Arriving at a time when Japanese manufacturers weren’t exactly known to challenge their North American or Europeans counterparts at building supercars, the fourth-generation Toyota Supra seemed like just another attention-grabber when it showed up at the CAR offices in time for the January 1994 performance issue.
But it quickly turned out that the extroverted styling wasn’t just all show. The 24-valve, 3,0-litre straight six engine used in the previous generation Supra was slightly enlarged, but more significantly a pair of turbocharges were added to the engine bay – pushing peak power up from 175 kW to 243 kW and maximum torque up from 344 N.m to 441 N.m.
The Supra registered a zero to 100 km/h sprint time of 6,46 seconds and top speed of 248 km/h.
