With Europe heading into its sunny season, the appeal of drop-top models comes to the fore once again. Those looking to blast dry their hair in the mornings as opposed to a more customary cruise may want to give the newly-announced Golf GTI Cabriolet a go.
Volkswagen has just released images and details of this new performance cabriolet and announced that it will go on sale in Europe later this year.
This cabriolet is powered by the same turbocharged 2,0-litre unit as found in the company’s famous hot hatch and delivers 155 kW and 280 N/m of torque. Drive is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission or Volkswagen’s optional six-speed DSG ‘box. A zero to 100 km/h sprint is possible in just over seven seconds, with a claimed top speed of 236 km/h.
The fabric roof can be dropped in 9,5 seconds and can be operated at speeds of up to 30 km/h.
The new Golf GTI Cabriolet will makes its official debut at next week’s Geneva Motor Show. Sad news for South African fans is that there are no plans as yet to bring this model to our sunny shores.
