Although Honda is currently still busy with the latest iteration of its NSX supercar, reports have emerged suggesting that it may be joined by a micronized version by 2016.
The report in Motortrend claims that an inside source at Honda’s US arm has hinted at the development of a compact sportscar initially wearing the “Small NSX” moniker. The source has also claimed that this model will lift most of its styling from the full-sized supercar along with its SH-AWD drivetrain – a move that will see the Small NSX joining its bigger brother under the performance hybrid banner.
In addition to borrowing visual cues, the Small NSX is likely to obtain certain mechanical components from the NSX in a bid to curb development costs.
The engine to which the SH-AWD system will be coupled still remains a mystery, although a turbocharged, direct-injection unit is a possibility. A selection of existing petrol motors currently doing service in a number of Honda’s stateside offerings have been hinted at. These include a 3,5-litre V6 and a pair of inline 4-cylinder engines displacing 2,4- and 2,0-litres.
If it is given the go-ahead, the Small NSX could go into production a year or so after the NSX goes on sale in 2014. It could potentially give Honda a foil to the likes of the likes of the Audi TT and Mercedes-Benz SLK (should less powerful motors find their way under the hood) or possibly the Porsche Boxster, should a higher-output powerplant get the nod.
