BMW has released numerous details of upcoming engines and updates to its current line-up.
3 Series
To bring a level of exclusivity to the 3 Series range, BMW has released the Coupé and Convertible Edition models. With this Edition Exclusive option, these three-door versions will receive 18-inch light-alloy wheels and an exterior paint colour called Mineral Grey. On the inside, Dakota leather upholstery will be available in a Pearl Grey-colour with stitching in a contrasting grey, or black with white stitching.
For the enthusiast, BMW will offer the M Sport Edition. As can be expected from the name, the manufacturer’s M division has had an influence on these models. Apart from the M Sport suspension, Silverstone paint – which is the same as found on the M3 – will be offered along with 18-inch Ferric Grey light-alloy wheels. The exterior mirrors are painted in black, while the rear apron with an integrated sports diffuser will be painted in the car’s body colour.
On the inside, the driver will notice sport seats with M detailing, an M Sport steering wheel and stainless-steel pedals. The seats also receive M piping, while the floor mats are finished with blue piping.
Additional to these options, the Convertible will be offered with a contrasting paint finish for the hardtop. This folding steel roof will be available in either black or Titanium Silver metallic, while up to 15 colours are available for the body. This option of a contrasting hardtop will also be available on the M3 Convertible.
5 Series
Mention the current 5 Series and most of us will immediately think of the M5. Quite right, especially since there is so much video content of this upcoming performance saloon available online. However, at the other end of the spectrum, BMW has released details about its 520d EfficientDynamics model.
This model will offer an impressive 135 kW and 380 N.m of torque from the four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, while consuming only 4,5 litres/100 km. To achieve this figure, the 520d uses, among other features, a stop/start system, brake energy regeneration, active cooling-flap control and a longer final-drive ratio to help lower the engine’s revolutions per minute.
Another four-cylinder engine that the 5 Series will receive, is a brand-new 2,0-litre twin-scroll turbopetrol. Using direct injection, Valvetronic and double-Vanos variable camshaft timing, this engine delivers 135 kW and 270 N.m. Combined fuel consumption will be between 6,8 and 7,0 litres/100 km, depending on the tyres fitted.
6 Series
In the next two months, South Africans will be able to buy the 6 Series Coupé. This model has been available overseas since last year, BMW has made a couple of appetising changes.
Apart from the 640d (230 kW/630 N.m) and the option of the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the 6 Series will also be available with the company’s M Sport package. On the 6 Series, this package will include an M aerodynamics body kit (most noticeable in the pictures on the front bumper), LED foglamps, 19-inch M light-alloy wheels and an M leather steering wheel.
BMW South Africa confirmed that the 640d Coupé will be locally available from early next year while nothing has yet been confirmed regarding the M Sport packages.
