Concept versions of Lamborghini’s Urus SUV have been doing the rounds at motor shows around the world for some time with little promise of a production version seeing the light of day. Until now…
At the recent North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) held at Detroit, the firm’s CEO Stephan Winkelmann confirmed that the luxury SUV will go into production in 2017. He predicts that the popularity and demand for large SUVs (that don’t necessarily go off-road) is still on the rise – an opionion shared by the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce, both of which also have SUV models in the pipeline.
The Urus will reportedly be based on the same platform that VW Group is developing for the Bentley SUV, upcoming Audi Q7 and the next-generation Porsche Cayenne. Ah, the beauty of shared development costs.
Powerplant details are still some way off, but the smart money is on the 4,0-litre twin-turbo V8 currently used in the RS7 and Bentley Continental GT.
