Following the recent launch of its all-new Grand Cherokee, Jeep plans to use the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show to introduce a new turbodiesel engine option, specifically for European and “other diesel markets” to its flagship range.
The new 3,0-litre V6 unit, developed in conjunction with with Fiat Powertrain, and built by VM Motori, features MultiJet II direct injection technology for precise fuel delivery and offers a maximum 177 kW at 4 000 r/min with 550 N.m of torque between 1 800 and 2 800 r/min. Despite this 10 per cent increase in performance over the unit that it replaces, Jeep claims a 17 per cent improvement in fuel consumption and emissions. This should translate to a combined 8,3 litres/100 kilometers and carbon dioxide emissions of 218 g/km.
A lower output version (140 kW/440 N.m) will also be offered in Europe in an effort to meet a potentially wider audience. This option will be standard fitment on Laredo models and optional on Limited and Overland specification.
The new diesel unit joins the two petrol engine options (5,7-litre V8 and 3,6-litre V6) in the Grand Cherokee lineup.
As with many latest generation diesel engines, the new Jeep 3,0-litre turbodiesel is designed to run on ultra-low-sulfur, a factor that may affect the determine the extent to which this model could potentially be to add the local range.
