Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March, Volkswagen has launched its newest green product, the Passat BlueMotion.
The German manufacturer has modified its 1,6-litre TDI turbodiesel engine to develop 77 kW. It’s connected to a six-speed manual gearbox to power the front wheels.
There are several other technologies which have been implemented to lower fuel consumption as far as possible. Apart from the stop/start and battery-regeneration systems, the Passat features low rolling-resistance tyres and a suspension system lowered by 15 mm at the front and 7,5 mm at the rear. There is also a revised radiator grille and an underbody panel. These aerodynamic changes help to lower the car’s drag coefficient.
The standard 16-inch alloy wheels are also engineered to be lighter and aerodynamically optimised.
The result of all these changes is a claimed average fuel consumption of 4,1 litres/100 km and 109 g/km of CO2.
