Lexus has released images and a smidgen of information surrounding the LF-LC concept, which is due to make an appearance at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.
Billed as a further evolution of the company’s L-Finesse design language, the LF-LC sports coupé is apparently being considered for production and could possibly end up competing against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CL and BMW’s 6 Series Coupé by 2014.
Reports suggest that the production car could be underpinned by a shortened version of the platform earmarked for the next-generation LS luxury saloon. Deciphering the model codes given to contemporary Lexus models – the LF mark being applied to future Lexus models, has further enforced this while LC alludes to a connection to the company’s LS luxury flagship and C possibly standing for “compact” or “coupé” – gives an indication that the production model could be pitched squarely at the aforementioned luxury German coupés.
Lexus has not divulged any details regarding the means by which the concept is powered, but it has ben suggested that a hybrid powertrain derived from the 5,0-litre V8/electric unit currently doing service in the LS600h could fit the bill.
While elements such as the hourglass-shaped grille and swept-back headlamps are reminiscent of the L-Finesse treatment doled out to the new GS model, there are also a number of stylistic nods to the company’s LF-A supercar – especially the sculpted rear apron, tail-lamp clusters with downward strakes and the bulging haunches with air scoops on either side.
The swooping exterior lines are echoed in the cabin, where swathes of stitched leather and wood are in keeping with the company’s luxury bent while the pod-like instrument binnacles lend an air of sportiness.
We’ll keep you updated closer to the car’s official unveiling at NAIAS next month.
