Mahindra has entered the compact SUV market with the Quanto, a new model that is said to combine the mobility of an SUV, the utility of an MPV and the comfort of a sedan. First seen at the Johannesburg International Motor Show it is now available for sale at more than 60 dealerships countrywide.
The new model is powered by a 2,2-litre turbodiesel engine which develops 89 kW of power and 290 N.m of torque. Claimed fuel economy is 7,6l/100km on the combined test cycle. Initially it will be offered in two-wheel, rear drive configuration, but a 4×4 version will be introduced in the future.
The Quanto features a body on chassis design, unlike all it’s competitors. This arrangement usually compromises comfort but adds to the ruggedness factor. It uses a coil spring suspension in the front and rear, with a five-link system for the live rear axle, while the braking system is a combination of front discs and rear drums. Ground clearance is claimed as 200 mm.
Standard equipment levels include air conditioning, a radio/CD audio system which is MP3 compatible, remote keyless entry, roof console with sunglass holder, rear window demister with wash-wipe facility, central locking, digital driver assist system, alloy wheels fitted with 205/65 R15 tyres, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors and front and rear power windows. Safety features include two airbags in front, anti-skid brakes and side impact beams in the doors.
The Mahindra Quanto SUV is covered by a 3-year/100 000km warranty and comes with a 3-year/60 000km service plan included in the purchased price.
