With the recent launch of the impressive new Ford Ranger pick-up range and subsequent inevitable discussions around how this latest entry into the highly competitive bakkie market stacks up, it’s worth remembering that the next major competitor (and one that’s pretty close to home for the Ranger) is waiting in the wings.
Revealed locally at the 2011 Johannesburg International Motor Show (JIMS), the new Mazda BT-50 range is scheduled for launch in the second quarter of 2012 and, like its oval-badged cousin, will be available in single- and double-cab, as well as, supercab (featuring easy-access clamshell rear doors) configuration.
The engine line-up will also mimic that of the Ranger range and feature both 2,2-litre and 3,2-litre TDCi options with a choice of either manual or automatic transmissions. A 122 kW 2,5-litre petrol unit will complete the line-up. It will be available in both 4×2 and 4×4 guise.
Where these family rivals are destined to differ greatly however is in the styling department. Ever since the first leaked images of the next BT-50 hit the net, it has been clear that this Japanese firm wants its contender to stand out from the crowd.
