[Mazda News] Mazda recently lifted the wraps off the third-generation Mazda3, the third model in its new line-up to be designed in the Kodo design language with an added dose of SkyActive technology and other newly designed systems to make one of the most enjoyable driving experiences on its segment.
The Kodo (soul of motion) ethos, responsible for the swoopy looks of the Mazda3, includes positioning large wheels in all four corners of the car, flared fenders, as well as an integrated license plate holder, sleek headlamps, design lines along the profile that gradually rise toward the rear, and narrow taillights positioned high on the tailgate, with narrow glass all-round.
Inside, the Mazda3 is designed to be as driver oriented as possible, as well as proving the passengers with a roomy, comfortable cabin. Amongst the new interior features are an Active Driving Display mounted which displays driving details and navigation information on a clear panel mounted behind the instrument cluster, as well as a piano black centre console to contrast against the brushed metal-look trim.
The new Mazda3 will be powered by three petrol engines, a single diesel powerplant and even a petrol-hybrid. The first petrol motor, a 1,5-litre four-cylinder unit, produces 86 kW and 150 N.m of torque, while the second is a 2,0-litre engine that makes 121 kW and 210 N.m of torque (an 88 kW version of the 2,0-litre will also be made available in some European markets), while the 2,5 petrol range-topper will produce 135 kW and 250 N.m of torque. The 2,2-litre diesel SkyActive unit produces 110 kW and 380 N.m of torque.
Amongst the fuel-saving technologies are the “i-stop” stop-start system, and i-Eloop brake energy regeneration system.
Mazda’s Proactive Safety, developed to assist the drive in avoiding dangerous situations, includes innovations like i-Activsense which employs radars and cameras to recognize hazards, automatic high-beam assist, a lane departure warning system, forward obstruction warning, and Smart City Brake Support – which helps prevent or minimise impact with the vehicle ahead while moving at lower speeds.
The Mazda3 joins its Mazda6 stablemate on the list for models bound to arrive in South Africa in the coming months. CARmag.co.za will keep you posted on more details and prices.
