To celebrate its second title in the F1 Constructors World Championship, Renault will offer a new version of the Mégane, – the Mégane Sport F1 R26. The name refers to the car that won the Formula 1 World Championship in 2006. Built at the Dieppe site and dedicated to Renault Sport Technologies, the R26 is the sportiest version of the Mégane.
Distinguishable from other Mégane Sport models thanks to unique graphics on the bumpers, doors and roof ( a free option), and red painted brake callipers peeking out from behind the 18-inch BeBop alloy wheels, the Mégane R26 retains the distinct rump of previous models.
More important though is this car’s ability on the road and track. Equipped with the “Cup” chassis and a limited slip differential, the R26 is pretty close to being a genuine competition car while also being very driveable on city streets. The “Cup” chassis employs specific dampers and 10 percent stiffer front springs, while rear damper travel has been slightly increased by reducing the size of the bump stops by 20 mm to optimise handling on poor surfaces. Stiffer anti-roll characteristics enhance cornering along with a larger front anti-roll bar and new rear axle with an additional anti-roll bar. All this should mean first class road holding.
The real hot stuff is found under the bonnet though, namely the evolved 2,0-litre 16-valve turbocharged engine that delivers 169 kW at 5 500 r/min and boasts peak torque of 310 N.m at 3 000 r/min. Taking credit for this power increase is optimised engine mapping and a modified exhaust.
Utilising a six-speed manual transmission, this engine propels the car from 0-100 km/h in 6,5 seconds, while the standing kilometre is covered in 26,6 seconds. The Mégane R26 comes equipped with “Power Start”, a stand still start optimisation feature that enables maximum acceleration without the car losing its grip. The limited-slip differential improves power transfer to the ground and offers secure handling, irrespective of driving style. Providing stopping force for this kind of performance are Brembo four-pot callipers and 312 mm vented discs.
Recaro bucket seats take pride of place in the sporty cabin. Providing a comforting presence, the leather-clad steering wheel, MP3/radio, automatic climate control, aluminium foot rest and pedal unit, and satin chrome-painted door handles make you forget that you’re in a motorsport-inspired car, though the numbered plaque bearing “World Champion 2005-2006” reminds you of this Mégane’s calibre.
Safety features on the Mégane R26 include Dynamic Handling control system (combining ESP, traction control and steering control), ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution and head curtain airbags in the front and rear.
Only available in a three-door body and three colour schemes, the Mégane Sport F1 R26 certainly is exclusive. Hurry though, Renault have stated that deliveries are to start in August.
