Mercedes-Benz has revealed the latest addition to its commercial vehicle range. Dubbed the Citan, it is smaller than the Sprinter, Viano and Vito and presents a compact load-lugger suited to heavily populated cities with narrow roads. That could go some way to explaining Mercedes’s decision to hold the Citan’s official unveiling in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
As with other Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles, the Citan van will be offered in more than one length. A total of three different lengths (compact, long and extra-long).
The engine range will consist of three turbodiesels delivering between 55 and 81 kW and a supercharged petrol engine developing 84 kW. These engines will be coupled with a choice of five- and six-speed transmissions.
Alongside fuel-saving start/stop technology, the Citan will also offer such safety systems as Mercedes’s adaptive ESP (a system which takes the vehicle’s load into consideration), ABS, traction control and ASR (acceleration skid control).
The Citan will be unveiled at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover, Germany, in September.
Mercedes-Benz South Africa confirmed to CAR that the Citan is likely to be introduced on the local market during the middle of 2013.
